WORKING
Shalour Gym
After finally making it through Reflection Cave and resting up in the Pokemon Center, you find yourself bored and looking for a challenge. Shalour City is a large sea-side city, so surely there's something interesting around here? The Tower of Mastery sticks up into the sky, a landmark for miles around, but you already know that it's not open to the general public. The city itself doesn't seem to have much to offer, until you notice a sign pointing towards the "Shalour Gym". You shrug and follow the directions - hey, there's nothing else to do around here.
The Gym itself appears to be some kind of huge roller-skating rink, fashioned into a circle. Around the edge of the circle are a collection of skaters, and clearly not all of them are Trainers. There are schoolchildren, middle age couples and elderly retirees all having a good time. Halfway into the middle of the circle are where the serious trainers hang out - you can see them now, working with all different kinds of Pokemon. Croagunk, Pancham, Hitmonlee... This must be a Fighting-type gym! You feel a grin split your face. Fighting Gyms are so easy to knock over it's not even funny. Almost all of them get caned by Flying-types, and the new Fairy classification revealed yet another weakness for aspiring challengers such as yourself to exploit.
After making your way to the innermost part of the circle, you find a simple elevator. Immediately upon stepping onto it, the elevator shudders and starts moving downwards, into the bowels of the earth. You descend fifty metres into a huge underground cavern, lit by large spotlights. In the middle of the cavern is a Pokemon battleground, albeit much larger than any standard one. A man is standing on the far side of the cavern, talking to a figure you can't quite make out. You squint to try and get a better look but the flashlights immediately move and being illuminating your position, almost blinding you. By the time the lift stops and you step off, the figure has almost disappeared into a steel door cut right into the cave walls. All you can make out is a long, dextrous purple tail.
"Welcome!" the man calls out, walking briskly towards you. "I was starting to fear that no one would ever come out this far to challenge me."
The flashlights readjust themselves to their standard positions, obviously calibrated to illuminate as much of the room as possible. You get your first clear look at the Gym Leader. He is tall, and quite heavily muscled. This makes it hard to guess his age - you put your money on late twenties. He runs his hands through his spiky, sandy-blonde and is sporting a large grin. You are surprised to see that he is clothes very normally, wearing only a red shirt with a National Park logo on it and a cream-coloured pair of cargo shorts. Large black hiking boots adorn his feet, and on his right hand is a black glove with a blue gem of some kind attached to it.
"My name is Jakk Carter," the man says as he shakes your hand. "I moved out here from Sinnoh to help unravel the secrets of Mega Evolution. I used to be a Gym Leader there and they needed one here, so I thought why not."
You introduce yourself and challenge him to a battle, which Carter happily accepts. As you walk back to your side of the field, you can't help but notice that the field shows signs of being regraded continually. There would be no need to do that unless it got completed destroyed on a regular basis. But there's no way of that - how many Fighting-types can there possibly be with that kind of power?
You turn around and prepare yourself. Carter is still wearing that grin, but it's a little more vicious now. He throws a PokeBall into the area, and the gem on his glove starts to shine. You can't help but wonder what you've gotten yourself into.
