Veilstone Gym
You arrive at Veilstone City, looking for a challenge. The city isn't that exciting - it's mostly warehouses and a small residential district, except for the towering shopping centre and the museum. The museum is rumoured to once have been the headquarters of an evil organisation, but these days it's a common destination for children and wannabe archaeologists. The city itself isn't that big, but there seems to be a lot of people walking around. Then again, it is a nice day, if a little bit brisk.
You decide to check out the supermarket before moving on - there might be some good specials, and you're running low on Repel. On the way, however, you see a sign pointing to a Gym. Intrigued, you walk over to have a look. You don't remember there being a Gym here, but you might as well wail on him and scoop his gym badge up before moving on. The sign is low-lying and mostly coloured brown, and it reads:
Veilstone Gym - Next Left
Gym Leader: Jakk Carter, the Ranged Fighter
You feel a grin split your face. A Fighting Gym? Really? There's so easy to knock over it's not even funny. There's like three Fighting Pokemon that aren't weak to Flying types, and you probably have a Psychic type somewhere on your belt. This shouldn't take too long. The only problem is that you came looking for a challenge, but you're apparently not going to get one here.
Five minutes later, you find yourself outside the gym. The exterior looks like any other regular gym, giving no hints as to what lays inside. The sliding doors open, as if the building itself is expecting you. You walk in, and immediately you see that this is no ordinary gym. The battle area is right in the middle of the gym, and takes up about 80% of the floor. The floor of the battle area itself is just plain dirt, except there are craters and small crevasses pockmarked all over the place, hinting at the remarkable power of the Pokemon that fight here. Large cables are bolted securely along the ceiling, and occasional sparks jump into the air. In fact, you notice that the lights on the ceiling are heavily reinforced, but you have no idea why. Over on the opposite wall is a large steel door. It hisses open revealing a darkened room with several lights flashing inside. You can just see various machines blinking, but then the Gym Leader emerges and your attention is instantly elsewhere.
Jakk Carter crosses the battlefield heading towards you, smiling widely and waving in a friendly fashion. You feel like waving back, but stop yourself. Carter is extremely tall, but not particularly muscle-bound which is strange for a Fighting-type Gym Leader. He has spiky sandy-blonde hair and mirthful brown eyes, and is wearing a very casual t-shirt and pair of shorts. The only way you would know he isn't an ordinary person is that he has some very strange shoes and gloves on - they look like highly advanced pieces of armour.
"Hey, it's nice to have a new challenger for once," Carter says when he is within speaking distance. "I'm getting tired of the same five people coming after me. I assume you are in fact here for a battle?"
Somewhat speech-less, you nod faintly. Carter grins, and jumps into the air. Little flares burst into existence from his boots, and he flies through the air to one of the sides of the battleground, waving for you to take the other side. When he lands on the ground, he snaps the fingers on his right hand. A blue flash being generated by the gloves temporarily blinds you, and when your vision returns a Poke Ball is resting firmly in Carter's hand. But where did it come from? There's no Poke Balls on his belt.
As you walk over to the other side of the arena, you can't help but wonder what you've gotten yourself into.
